I haven't been able to connect in about a week. I'd be sorry to see it go.

I tried FIBS but the client software for Windows isn't great, I had a game stop halfway through and couldn't get it restarted... SafeHarbor seems OK but games seem to take about twice as long as with GamesGrid.

I also tried Play65 but on Windows 10 the software only worked right after installing, then got errors on the next startup (probably wanting Admin rights, but I stopped fooling with it after a few tries).

I have played to ALL existing online sites.
Play65 was excellent (owne by Israelis-dominated by Turks) but now RIP. Today it just directs you to other sites.
For FIBS try the JavaFibs Client
If you are willing to pay a monthly fee these 2 sites are good but unfortunately there is low participation
http://www.gammonsite.com
Netgammon (google it)

Relatively "best" free site today seems to be playOK.com with high volume of participation at any moment (about 300-400). At least 50% are Romanians and nearly all of them very rude. Just close the chat window. Also I suspect the server favors the weaker player on the dice.

I recently tried Gammonsite (aka Gamesite) and posted a review.

I just tried Netgammon briefly and will post a review shortly.

When I visited PlayOK, I recognised that it's the site where
I had played card games eons ago and I created a new account
but didn't have a chace to test it yet.

Cards may have been rigged also but I probably didn't care at
the time, as I never had any claims to be good at card games.

However, rigged dice would be a deal breaker and maybe that's
why I hadn't played backgammon there... (?)

I had tried SafeHarbor a few years ago but I don't remember
why I haven't stayed there. I may take a second look.

Isn't GamesGrid the "private club" where you need to show
your ID through a small opening in the steel reinforced
door (which some suspect of being a gambling operation)??

Apparently it's the favorite with "giants".(?) So, it would
be interesting to play there if I were invited/admitted.

In my experience FIBS is the best I've tried and I'm on it regularly (BlueDice is my screen name) There are regular tournaments and of course a ratings system. Match files can be auto saved in .mat format so they can be opened in GNUBG (I would assume in XG also). I'm using the JavaFibs client which is superb (unlike some of the others) Also, you can chat if you are inclined. I find it much like the old GamesGrid if you ever played on there. There is no money play. The negative is that participation is not as high as you would like but you will get regular games on there and meet some nice people. Next best for me is PlayOK. High participation but also a high proportion of garbage. Your matches are saved but you need to transcribe the moves to a text file and save as a .mat to import to GNUBG. There is a rating system.
